Pastor refuses to bury 93 year old long-time member over lack of tithes

Rev Houston: “Ya gotta pay to pray”

After reading the below appalling story, I thought it was another fabricated satire story by some Onion like media website. However, after verifying the validity of the report, I was disgusted beyond belief:

Olivia Blair lived to be the ripe old age of 93 before she passed away after years of sickness and months of being comatose.

She had joined Fourth Missionary Baptist Church at the age of 43, and when she passed away, her family contacted the church to let them know and requested they perform her burial services.

You can imagine their shock and disappointment when pastor Walter F. Houston said ‘Absolutely not!’

The reason: She had not paid her tithes over the past two years.

“For the last two years, my mother has been in either a nursing home or she’s been in a hospital. And the last few months, she was in a coma!” explained Barbara Day, the decedent’s daughter. source

Are you kidding me?

I have little or nothing to do with organized religion. And it’s no secret that droves of young, middle-aged and seniors, while living a very spiritual life, are rejecting the concept of the ATM church.

Without a doubt Rev. Walter F Houston is proof positive of why preachers have such a bad name.

Who wants to be part of a church more concerned about tithing, collection plate passing — the building fund, the love fund, the mission fund, the pastor needs a new Cadillac fund — than they are about souls?

A 93 year old church member should be in the circle-of-elders. Our seniors have paid their dues, toted enough water and walked a long journey. At this season of life, the church community should honor them by serving them and making sure their golden years are just that — golden years.

Unfortunately, one can not turn on the TV — Monday to Saturday and twice on Sunday — without finding wolves dressed as sheep pimping the word. Jack legged ministers, greedy preachers, con artists, swindlers or carpetbaggers in the pulpit (for self-serving reasons) preying on elderly members on fix incomes is an utter abomination.

Enough said.
